Bring your creative visions to life with our New Zealand made rub on transfers, perfect for all your home décor and DIY projects. These transfers offer a simple yet elegant way to add intricate designs and personalised touches to a variety of surfaces, ensuring your projects stand out with unique flair and professional quality.
Select the Right Background: For optimal results, apply the transfer to a light-coloured background, such as white or cream. This enhances the vibrancy of the design.
Trim the Transfer: Carefully cut around your transfer image, leaving a border of no more than 5mm (0.5cm). If your sheet contains multiple images, cut each one out individually.
Prepare the Painted Surface: Ensure the painted surface is completely dry and cured. This is crucial for the transfer to adhere properly.
Clean Thoroughly: Remove any dirt, grease, or wax from the surface. A clean, smooth surface is essential for a successful transfer.
Seal if Necessary: Depending on the type of paint used, you may need to seal the surface before applying the transfer. This step helps improve adhesion and ensures the design looks its best.
Practice Makes Perfect: If you're new to rub-on transfers, use a practice transfer to familiarise yourself with the technique. This will help you gain confidence before applying your actual design.
Smooth and Clean Surface: Double-check that the surface is free from any wax, oil, or dirt. This preparation step is key to achieving a seamless and long-lasting result.
By taking the time to properly prepare and practice, you set the stage for a beautiful and durable transfer that enhances your project.
To ensure that the transfer is well-prepared, it is important to cut around your transfer image leaving no more than 5mm/0.5cm of excess material. If there are several images on one sheet, cut each one out separately
Positioning Your Transfer: Before removing the white backing sheet, ensure your transfer is positioned exactly where you want it. This step is crucial for achieving the perfect placement.
Removing the Backing Sheet: Carefully peel away the white protective sheet from the transfer image. Handle the exposed adhesive side with care to prevent any accidental sticking or damage.
Initial Adhesion: Use your finger to gently press the transfer onto the surface. This will help create a slight initial bond.
Securing the Transfer: Apply even pressure over the transfer using a rubbing stick, squeegee, or a similar tool. As you do this, you may notice the translucent film turning white, which indicates that the image is transferring successfully to the surface.
To remove the translucent film from the image, begin by holding the sheet with one hand. Carefully lift one corner using your nail and proceed slowly to ensure the image remains attached to the surface.
Do not pull the film straight up, use a downward side to side rolling motion.
If the image doesn't separate easily, lay the sheet back down and continue rubbing until it detaches then try removing the sheet from another corner.
After removing the translucent film, use a clean, soft cloth to gently smooth out any areas that may require flattening.
Topcoat: To protect your transfer apply either a water based top coat/ lacquer or a clear acrylic spray.
Sand: If needed, use 800 grit sandpaper to gently smooth out the edges of your transfer.
What is a rub-on transfer?
A rub-on transfer consists of an image printed on a specially designed film with an adhesive backing. These transfers can be applied to a wide range of surfaces by rubbing the adhesive sheet onto them. The process is straightforward yet effective, resulting in a professional finish that gives the impression the image was directly printed on the surface.
Are rub-on transfers permanent?
Rub-on transfers are generally considered semi-permanent. To enhance their durability and lifespan, you can apply a clear water-based top coat over the transfer. This protective layer helps shield the design from wear and tear, ensuring it remains intact and vibrant over time.
Can they be used outside?
No, they are not intended for outside use
Why cut around the transfer image?
To reduce the halo effect that may occur when transferring an image onto a surface, carefully trim the excess material around the image, leaving no more than 5mm (0.5cm). If your sheet features multiple images, ensure you cut each one out individually for a clean and accurate application. When applied to a light background, such as white or cream, the halo should not be visible.
Should I Seal the Transfer?
Sealing your rub-on transfer is optional, but it is recommended to enhance durability, especially on surfaces that experience frequent use. Here are some sealants you can use:
Clear Acrylic Spray: Apply a light mist of clear acrylic spray to seal the transfer. This will provide a durable and invisible protective layer. Ensure even coverage by spraying from a distance and allowing it to dry thoroughly.
Water-Based Top Coat or Lacque :Use a clear, non-yellowing top coat for added protection. To avoid brush marks, apply the sealant with a sponge or a roller for a smooth finish.
